I always wonder who invented false eyelashes and when, I did a little research and this is what I found:
I came across this beautiful pic of Max Factor and actress Jean Harlow, I had to share.
The first patented false eyelashes were created by Canadian inventor Anna Taylor in 1911:
• 1911
Taylor patented false eyelashes that were made of a crescent-shaped strip of fabric with tiny hairs attached
• 1902
Karl Nessler, a famous hair stylist and inventor, patented a method for weaving artificial eyelashes and eyebrows in the United Kingdom
• 1916
Director D.W. Griffith used false eyelashes made of human hair woven through gauze to make actress Seena Owen stand out in his movie Intolerance
• 1947
The Aylott brothers, British makeup artists, formed Eyelure, one of the first companies to mass-produce false eyelashes
False eyelashes became more popular in the 1930s and again in the 1960s. The style of false eyelashes changed over time, from the original fringe base to more advanced designs like flares and cluster lashes.
The history of false eyelashes is marked by:
• Ancient Egypt
Egyptians used brushes and ointments to create voluminous lashes as early as 3500 B.C. They also used kohl, a combination of crocodile dung, water, and honey, to line their eyes and deepen their lashes.
• The Middle Ages
Women plucked their eyebrows and eyelashes to make their foreheads appear higher.
• The late 19th and early 20th centuries
False eyelashes were associated with prostitutes and actresses, and were considered racy.
• The 1920s
Beaded lashes were a popular style, created by heating a cake of wax in a fire and dipping a stick into it to dot the ends of the lashes.
